The Dorset Coop is supplied flat packed for easy home assembly. This set comes flat packed in 4 boxes. Instructions are included. All you will need is a small screwdriver and an adjusting spanner.

1. How many hens can the Dorset with Double Run hold?

The raised roosting and nesting area of the Dorset coop will hold 5 to 6 medium sized birds quite comfortably. What is probably more important to consider is the amount of space they will have during the day. If you intend to give them time to roam around your garden then the run space is less of a determining factor and up to 6 hens would be fine. However if they are to spend their entire day inside the Dorset with Double Run then 4 hens would be our recommedation.

The benefit of all our coops is that the run can be extended at a later date should the need arise and in theory you can add as many run extensions as you need.

Wood & General Maintenance

The wood we use in this product is a highly durable and scented softwood which is noted for its resistance to decay and rot. Our wooden coops are treated with a base coat of wood preservative but as with all outdoor wooden structures, we recommend that you treat your coop with a high-quality varnish or wood preservative once a year (preferably before the winter season) to maintain the applied preservative and water repellent properties. We also highly recommend that you try and position your chicken coop in a protected area which is not overly exposed to high winds and the elements.

Where can we deliver to?

Orders can be delivered anywhere in mainland England, Wales, and most areas in the lowlands of Scotland. If you live outside these areas we then, unfortunately, cannot deliver our products to you. This includes the Channel Islands and Northern Ireland (IM, GY, JE, BT)

Like most online companies we rely on (3rd party) courier companies to deliver all our orders around the country. As much as we would love to get our products in the hands of as many people as possible the cost of getting our coops to anyone who lives outside mainland England and Wales is prohibitive - sometimes more than the actual cost of the product!

Delivery to Scotland

We can deliver to most lowland areas in Scotland. These include the following postcodes: DD1-7 , DG , EH , FK1-6 , G , KA1-26 , KA29-30 , KY , ML , PA1-19 , PH1-2, TD

If you live outside these areas then unfortunately, we are unable to offer delivery due to the high extra charges levied by the courier companies we use. You are welcome to arrange your own courier to collect from us, or we can deliver the items to a courier up north for onward journey to you.

Delivery to the Isle of Wight

The courier company that we use can deliver to the Isle of Wight. However, there is a delivery surcharge of £70 per order.

*This is an estimate based on the majority of orders sent, however, we cannot absolutely guarantee it.

The benefit of all our coops is that the run can be extended at a later date should the need arise and in theory you can add as many run extensions as you need. On a side note, we'd recommend that whatever your circumstance and set up if you can give your hens a few hours outside their coop and run in the late afternoon and early evening.

2. Can I set up the Dorset the other way around?

While some customers in the past have set up their coop the other way around, it's not straightforward and would involve a fair bit of D.I.Y to do, so unless you are adept at D.I.Y then the Dorset should be put together the way it is shown in the photos on our website.

3. Can I fit an Automatic Door Opener to this coop?

Most door openers on the market work with doors that open in an up/down direction (pop-hole doors). Our Devon Hen House has a pop-hole door and has been specifically designed so it can be fitted with any one of these automatic door openers. We unfortuntely don't have an automatic door opener that can work on the sliding door of the Dorset.

4. Is the wood treated?

Yes, the Dorset Coop comes with a light base coat of wood preservative

But as with all outdoor wooden structures in our harsh climate, we recommend that the timber is treated on a regular basis to ensure a long life.

If the coop is treated, to begin with, and thereafter on a yearly basis, and is well looked after and cleaned regularly there is no reason why a lifespan of 5 to 7 years could not be expected.

There are many popular products available with Cuprinol and Ronseal amongst the better-known brands. If you are looking for a clear wood preserver that will keep the colour of your coop then try this.

5. Can I add a run at a later stage?

Yes, you can add runs at any stage. These can be joined onto the front or back of the coop and you can join as many runs together to form whatever size of space that you need. For more information on the Dorset Run by itself click here: Dorset Run.

6. How do I lock the roof?

The best place to attach a latch is to the side of the coop as shown in the image below:

Dorset roof latch

7. Is the Dorset fox-proof?

We would like to think that our coops are made to a higher standard than most other suppliers in this price range. While we have purposely used thicker, sturdier wood, wire and locks with the aim to make it as safe and secure as possible for your chickens we cannot absolutely guarantee that foxes and other predators won’t try and target them. Foxes are by far the biggest threat that your pets will face, so if you are going to keep chickens then we also urge you to take these added precautions, especially if you know that you have foxes in your area.
