Sussex Coop & Run
The Sussex Chicken House And Run is aesthetically pleasing whilst being strong and sturdy. The extra add-on run gives you and your hens over 23 square feet of secure run space.
The side run can be fitted on either side of the Sussex Chicken House and we've also designed it to be easily extendable - so you always have that option of increasing the amount of run space for your hens without any major hassle or special D.I.Y skills.
Made from high-quality timber, each piece of wood is carefully planed to avoid any splintering. The much thicker, sturdier chicken wire that we use in the coop and run ensures your hens are ultimately safer from foxes and rodents.
The large front door of the run allows adults and children to gain easy access at any time. Each of the 4 doors to the Sussex and Run is fitted with a solid brass-metal brushed chrome finish lock.
The Sussex Chicken House with Run with its unique look, easy clean pull-out tray, un-boltable nesting box and multiple access points for collecting or tending your chickens makes it a great choice for the urban garden.

1. How many hens can the Sussex With Run hold?
The raised roosting and nesting area of the Sussex coop will hold 4 to 5 medium sized birds quite comfortably. What is probably more important to consider is the amount of space they will have during the day.
If you intend to give them time to roam around your garden then the run space is less of a determining factor and 4 to 5 hens would be fine. However if they are to spend their entire day inside the Sussex and Run then ideally for 2 - 3 medium sized hens would be our recommendation. The Sussex with Double Run which would be perfect for up to 4 hens.
The benefit of all our coops is that the run can be extended at a later date should the need arise and in theory you can add as many run extensions as you need. On a side note, we'd recommend that whatever your circumstance and set up if you can give your hens a few hours outside their coop and run in the late afternoon and early evening.
Wood & General Maintenance
The wood we use in this product is a highly durable and scented softwood which is noted for its resistance to decay and rot. Our wooden coops are treated with a base coat of wood preservative but as with all outdoor wooden structures, we recommend that you treat your coop with a high-quality varnish or wood preservative once a year (preferably before the winter season) to maintain the applied preservative and water repellent properties. We also highly recommend that you try and position your chicken coop in a protected area which is not overly exposed to high winds and the elements.

Where can we deliver to?
Orders can be delivered anywhere in mainland England, Wales, and most areas in the lowlands of Scotland. If you live outside these areas we then, unfortunately, cannot deliver our products to you. This includes the Channel Islands and Northern Ireland (IM, GY, JE, BT)
Like most online companies we rely on (3rd party) courier companies to deliver all our orders around the country. As much as we would love to get our products in the hands of as many people as possible the cost of getting our coops to anyone who lives outside mainland England and Wales is prohibitive - sometimes more than the actual cost of the product!
Delivery to Scotland
We can deliver to most lowland areas in Scotland. These include the following postcodes: DD1-7 , DG , EH , FK1-6 , G , KA1-26 , KA29-30 , KY , ML , PA1-19 , PH1-2, TD
If you live outside these areas then unfortunately, we are unable to offer delivery due to the high extra charges levied by the courier companies we use. You are welcome to arrange your own courier to collect from us, or we can deliver the items to a courier up north for onward journey to you.
Delivery to the Isle of Wight
The courier company that we use can deliver to the Isle of Wight. However, there is a delivery surcharge of £70 per order.
1. How many hens can the Sussex And Run hold?
It will depend on the breed of chicken and the size of the breed, and also how you intend to keep them. The raised roosting and nesting area of the Sussex Coop will hold 4 to 5 medium-sized birds quite comfortably.
What is probably more important to consider is the amount of space they will have during the day. If you intend to give them time to roam around your garden then the run space is less of a determining factor and 4 to 5 hens would be fine.
However, if they are to spend their entire day inside the Sussex With A Run then to be fair to your hens we would recommend just 2 or 3 small medium-sized hens and ideally, we'd hope you would consider upgrading to the Sussex with Double Run which would be perfect for up to 4 hens.
The benefit of all our coops is that the run can be extended at a later date should the need arise and in theory you can add as many run extensions as you need. On a side note, we'd recommend that whatever your circumstance and set up if you can give your hens a few hours outside their coop and run in the late afternoon and early evening.
2. Can I set up the Sussex Chicken Coop the other way around?
While some customers in the past have set up their coop the other way around, it's not straight forward and would involve a fair bit of D.I.Y to do so. The Sussex has been designed to be constructed the way it is shown in the photos on our website.
3. Can I fit an Automatic Door Opener to this coop?
Most door openers on the market work with doors that open in an up/down direction (pop-hole doors). Our Devon Hen House has a pop-hole door and has been specifically designed so it can be fitted with any one of these automatic door openers. The Sussex has a sliding door and so these and most other door openers on the market will not work with a sliding door.
4. Can I move the Sussex Chicken Coop easily?
Yes, it can be moved but at almost 50kgs and over 2 meters long you are going to need an extra pair of hands to help you move the Sussex Coop. If you have a Sussex with Run or Double Run and want to move your coop then the answer would be to first disconnect the runs from the coop and move each section separately.
5. Can I add more runs at a later stage?
Yes, you can add extra Sussex Runs at any stage and you can join as many runs together to form as long space as you need. For more information on the Sussex Run by itself click here: Sussex Chicken Runs
6. Is the wood treated?
Yes, the Sussex Chicken Coop ccomes with a light base coat of wood preservative
But as with all outdoor wooden structures in our harsh climate, we recommend that the timber is treated on a regular basis to ensure a long life.
If the coop is treated, to begin with, and thereafter on a yearly basis, and is well looked after and cleaned regularly there is no reason why a lifespan of 5 to 7 years could not be expected.
There are many popular products available with Cuprinol and Ronseal amongst the better-known brands. If you are looking for a clear wood preserver that will keep the colour of your coop then try this.
7. Can I use the Sussex for rabbits?
While the product has been specifically designed to house chickens a few customers have purchased the Sussex Chicken Coop for their rabbits and the feedback has been positive. We also make and sell a wide range of well-made rabbit hutches and runs. Visit our website: www.Rabbit-Hutches.co.uk
8. Is the Sussex Chicken House fox proof?
We would like to think that our coops are made to a higher standard than most other suppliers in this price range. While we have purposely used thicker, sturdier wood, wire and locks with the aim to make it as safe and secure as possible for your chickens we cannot absolutely guarantee that foxes and other predators won’t try and target them. Foxes are by far the biggest threat that your pets will face, so if you are going to keep chickens then we also urge you to take these added precautions, especially if you know that you have foxes in your area.
